Race report on the Stour Descent to follow shortly
Take a look at “Hell on Two Wheels” Great insight into RAAM, maybe one day!!!
Posted: November 30, 2013 in UncategorizedWith next year fast approaching and the time to start making decisions on what races to enter I have been looking for something new to challenge me physically. I have been intrigued by the Devize to Westminister for a few years, not that I’m competitive but my father has always wanted to do it and I thought this would be a good opportunity to get one over him!! So how do you train for a 125 mile paddle??? firstly I had to find someone who knew what they were doing and lived within a reasonable driving distance so that we could train together throughout the winter.
I have known Mike Trew a friend of the family for a number of years, he is a great athlete in his own right: Grand Union Canal Run finisher,Triple Ironman and many more events. It wasn’t until we were running together at the Thames Ring 250 that he mentioned that he had completed DW 4 times. At the time I didn’t think much about it, but around October time I approached him to find out what he thought about partnering me in 2014. He was excited about the prospect, the last time he raced was about ten years ago. This was ideal, he had all the equipment and lived about one hour away.
So this is where we are now…….Mike an experienced paddler, me a complete novice and 5 months to train for a 125 mile paddle with 77 portages. Our first race will be on the 1st Dec, 15 miles at a race called the Stour Descent. Next year we will be targeting a series of races called the Waterside Series that most paddlers will use as part of their beat up to DW.
I’m really excited about the prospect of doing something totally different, I will be posting along the way so watch this space.
With the winter fast approaching I have decided to try and row One Million Metres on a Concept 2 Rower, I’m not too sure how long this will take but I have given myself a completion date of 1st April, 6 Months away. This should be more than enough time!!!!

Enjoyed reading this book, I still cant comprehend the extent of the doping scandel that continues to plague cycling.
Above is the link for my Thames Ring 250 Race Report
Wow what can I say the Thames Ring was epic. I COMPLETED in 85hrs 30 mins.
Most definitly the hardest thing I have done. I will be posting a race report when I can work out what actually happened!!
Next up is the Thames Ring 250 in three days time. This is the third race on my calendar this year having already completed The White Cliffs 100 in March and 2swim4life 24 mile swim in April.
I keep asking myself the question am I ready?
Too be honest I really dont know, Ive approached this race differently to any other I have done, instead of progressively increasing my mileage and running consistently I have done the opposite, my running the last three months has been very little instead I have opted to do more cross training, alot of cycling, skipping and weights.
I feel heavier than I have been for a while which could be a problem but I do feel robust and strong which in a race covering this distance I believe can only be agood
Completion is what Im setting out to do, the cut off is 100hrs as long as I make that I will consider that Goal achieved.
I will try to make updates via twitter and facebook
